In Key Stage 1 (Year 1, Year 2)

What are the children going to learn in Key Stage 1?

At Smallberry Green, children learn phonics throughout Early Years and Key Stage 1. It is taught daily, in short sessions so that children build up and practise the skills they need to use in reading and writing.

Practising the sounds correctly is really important!

Here is a video which shows you how to say all the sounds we work on with the children.

Each year group works on a phonic phase:

Year 1 works on phases 2, 3,4 and 5

Year 2 works on phases 3,4,5 and 6.

The school follows the letters and sounds programme:

Here are the sounds and words taught in each phase

Children move to the each new phase when they can confidently read and write using these sounds.
