PE

The Intent, Implementation and Impact of our Curriculum.

Our school aims to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We listen to our children’s requests and provide them with a range of active experiences and clubs. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes. We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. We strive to educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and will continue to support our children’s well-being. We have strong links with local clubs and partnerships within our community to ensure the children and families receive the support and knowledge they need.

Intent

PE at Smallberry Green is inclusive and aims to develop our children’s knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing in our children now and for their future. We are committed to deliver high-quality teaching, providing opportunities to collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. All of our children, including those who have SEND, have English as an additional language or are from disadvantaged backgrounds, are provided with new experiences, promoting participation and healthy life-styles.

The Smallberry Green Primary School strongly recognises the value of Physical Education. We fully adhere to the aims of the national curriculum for Physical Education to ensure that all children:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • engage in competitive sports and activities.
  • lead healthy, active lives.

Implementation

Children at Smallberry Green Primary School participate in weekly 2 hour PE and sporting activities. Each year group will focus on two different sports/skills per term, allowing children to embed learning, remember learning and at the end of the term, utilise these skills to compete in an intra-competition. Our PE curriculum incorporates both a variety of sports; ensuring children develop confidence, and a clear progression to ensure progress and development. Teachers are encouraged to use, and adapt, The Get Set PE curriculum, designed by Smallberry Green when planning, resourcing and developing lessons. Throughout the school and lesson timetable, children are as active as possible, with initiatives like the of daily mile sessions and active Mathematics becoming part of the daily timetable, helping children meet the required 30 minutes of physical activity at school.

Children are exposed to competitive sports and activities through external and internal competitions, promoting the engagement, participation and understanding of competition. These include Key Stage 1 and 2 Sport festivals, consistent cluster competitions and, if successful, London Youth Games events. We compete, as a school, in multiple Borough competitions, allowing children of all ages the opportunities for once in a lifetime experiences.

We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities during and after school, predominantly with our community partnership with Conquest Academy Coaches. Children in Year 4 attend swimming lessons throughout the year, ensuring they leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently. Community and Borough visitors are invited to work closely with students to continue to build on their skills. We welcome Dukes Meadow Tennis, Middlesex Cricket, enter the London Mini-Marathon and promote local clubs and sports at our annual Health Fair. ealth Children are provided with lunchtime inclusive clubs, after school inclusive clubs and a variety of personal challenges to participate in at lunchtimes. This ensures that at Smallberry we promote exercise, well-being and a healthy lifestyle.

Impact

At The Smallberry Green Primary School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. All of our pupils are physically active and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom – behaviour for learning is excellent. Children understand how to lead healthy lifestyles and recognise the importance of exercise. Pupil conferencing demonstrates that children enjoy PE and develop a love of sport, and physical activity, that they pursue outside of school and in future life outside of primary school. Participation in PE competitions, sports events and clubs demonstrates different groups’ enthusiasm for the subject, including PPG children and girls.

At Smallberry Green, PE is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where children have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that if taught well and the children are encouraged to succeed, they will continue to have a physically active life. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to success and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities.
