The Intent, Implementation and Impact of our Curriculum.

Intent

In today’s rapidly evolving world, essential jobs and skills look vastly different from those of a decade ago. At Smallberry Green Primary School, we believe that a robust computing education equips all students with the adaptability and skills needed to thrive in a society shaped by technology. Through the Teach Computing curriculum, we ensure a carefully structured, spiral approach to learning, where core skills are introduced, revisited, and refined across each year group. This prepares students with the foundational abilities they will need to succeed in the future workplace and in a digital society.

Our curriculum encourages all students to locate, analyse, exchange, and present information effectively, supporting confidence, creativity, and independence. We’re committed to an inclusive approach, ensuring that our diverse learners—some of whom may not have access to technology at home—gain equal opportunity to benefit from computing education.

The core of our program lies in computational thinking, creativity, and collaboration. In the older years, students will have the chance to work on collaborative projects, fostering teamwork and applying their skills in real-world contexts. In addition to computer science fundamentals, students explore links between computing, mathematics, science, and design and technology, gaining insights into both natural and artificial systems. This approach supports their journey toward digital literacy, empowering them to communicate, create, and contribute thoughtfully as future professionals and active digital citizens.

Implementation

At Smallberry Green, all learners—including those with SEND, EAL, PPG, and higher abilities—are provided with a wide range of digital tools to support their learning and to make informed choices about technology use. Internet safety is a priority across all year groups and is reinforced through dedicated lessons, workshops, and sessions that involve parents, ensuring students and families understand safe online practices.

Impact

Due to the implementation of this robust computing curriculum, all children at Smallberry Green are increasingly digitally literate and able to join the rest of the world on its digital platform. Pupil conferencing and book scrutiny demonstrate that our children are equipped, not only with the skills and knowledge to use technology effectively and for their own benefit, but more importantly – safely. The biggest impact we want on our children is that they understand the consequences of using the internet and that they are also aware of how to keep themselves safe online. Children are increasingly demonstrating that they are acquiring these skills and constant learning on this topic, ensures that more and more pupils behave cautiously online.

As children become more confident in their abilities in Computing, they also become more independent and key life skills such as problem-solving, logical thinking and self-evaluation have started to become second nature.
