The Intent, Implementation and Impact of our Curriculum

Intent

Here, at Smallberry Green Primary School, our Modern Foreign language is Spanish. The intention of the Spanish curriculum is for all groups of children, including those with SEND, EAL, PPG and most able, to engage in learning not only about a new language, but also to learn about the culture of many Spanish-speaking countries. At Smallberry, Spanish is our chosen language because many of our students have links to Spain and Spanish speaking countries (eg holidays, family heritage, sports etc). We aim for our children to be inspired and develop a genuine interest in learning other languages as well as developing acceptance and respect for other cultures. Through teaching consistent lessons that follow a clear progression of skills, by the end of KS2 we aim for our students to have built a solid foundation in speaking, reading, listening and writing skills in Spanish.

Implementation

Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children’s skills in languages.  Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary and grammar organised around topics each half term. We follow the Language Angels scheme of work which ensures that high quality, consistent and accurate language is being taught across the school. Where it is needed for the individual needs of our students, we supplement with our own resources. All KS2 pupils receive at least 45 minutes per week of MFL instruction from their classroom teacher with regular termly check-ups from our MFL coordinator. The main skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking are embedded throughout the lessons to ensure a broad range of stimulating, engaging and challenging experiences for all. Spanish is visible and used throughout the school through ways such as class displays, MFL ambassador and through features throughout the term in our school newsletter

Impact

The impact of our MFL curriculum is that children understand the relevance of learning a new language and they grow in their proficiency of the Spanish language. They understand how it relates to everyday life and its importance for work and travel in an increasingly global society. As well as this, they fully understand how Spanish connects to their lives in and out of school, where it relates to sports such as football, travel, cooking and families in our community. All children leave Smallberry Green with a desire to continue learning languages and are able to confidently use their Spanish skills in other areas of life.
